Josh Vela reflects on Emirates FA Cup victory over Oxford City

30 November 2020

Josh Vela gives his thoughts on Town's 1-0 win over Oxford City in the second round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Shrewsbury Town secured a spot in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup with a victory over Oxford City.

The Hoops took Town deep into extra-time but the Shrews came out victorious after Daniel Udoh netted for his team late on.

Town midfielder Josh Vela was pleased with the win and is looking forward to seeing who Salop will take on in the next round of the competition.

On the result and making it through to the next round:

“It was a tough game. This was their cup final if you like but we got the result and it was a good one-nil win to make it to the next round. It was always going to be tough. They came here as full of enthusiasm as you would expect and they made it tough for us but we came through which is the main thing.

“We had a few chances cleared off the line in extra time so it was coming and I’m glad Dan scored to get us through.

“The third round is where the big boys come in so hopefully we can get a big tie here with a few fans in and maybe get on the television - that would be nice."

On the clean sheet and having Matija Sarkic back in the team:

“It was really important that we got a clean sheet. Having Matty back really helped us with crosses into the box and he is really calm for us in goal. They came on to us in the second half and they had a good go but Matty made a few good saves to keep us in the game."

On early life under the new manager:

“He’s come in and been brilliant with the lads. He watched the lads on Friday morning and he has told us how he wants us to play - he is very experienced and has been at some good clubs so I can’t wait to work with him.

“It’s a clean slate for everyone so hopefully I impressed him. He is a really funny guy but you don’t want to get on the wrong side of him - but that’s what we need."
