Steve Cotterill first interview

Steve Cotterill gives his thoughts on joining the Shrews.

Shrewsbury Town Football Club were delighted to welcome Steve Cotterill to the Club as the new Salop Manager penned a three-and-a-half-year deal at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Town’s new boss brings a wealth of experience to Shropshire having won Sky Bet League One and Two winners’ medals.

Steve is delighted to have joined the Shrews and is looking forward to getting started with his new team.

On joining the Club:

"I am really pleased to be here. It has been a real hectic 48 hours for me but getting onto the training pitch and meeting the lads was good - I’ve enjoyed today. I enjoyed watching training and they worked hard today.

"I know this is a good Club and I know it's a well-run Club - that comes from the Chairman and Brian. I have always thought this is a difficult place to get a result - especially when the fans are here.

"I’ve known the Chairman for around 20 years and we first met years ago when I was at Cheltenham. He rang me about the job when I was doing a fitness class at home from the TV. That escalated to me speaking to Brian Caldwell and it went from there."

On fixtures coming up:

"We have some really good games coming up so it's going to be a tough month. The pitch looks fantastic here. I spoke to the ground staff and they've done a fantastic job. The training ground looks great as well.

"The next game will be very tricky - we have to be mindful of that. David Oldfield is a good coach and he's done well to get Oxford to where they are now in the FA Cup. It won't be an easy task that’s for sure. We need to make sure we are up for the game.

"The players have to do well and the fans will get behind them. Lockdown has been incredibly frustrating for fans around the country so I'm sure as these lockdowns end - it will benefit football. The fans are the ones who bring honesty from the players. There is no hiding from the fans."
