David Longwell on Town's Academy win over Salford

4 October 2020

David Longwell gives his thoughts on Town's 2-1 win over Salford under-18's.

Shrewsbury Town's under 18's took on Salford City this weekend and emerged victorious.

A 2-1 comeback win for Town ensured the Salop Academy team earned all three points despite the early set-back

Academy Manager, David Longwell was pleased with the result and enjoyed the football his young team displayed.

On his side’s performance:

“It’s good that they managed to get the three points. From a general performance point of view, they played well. They managed to create a lot of chances and get into the final third a lot but they should’ve scored 5 or 6 or even more than that today. That was the only frustrating part of it. The positive part is that they created chance after chance but we have to learn to take those chances.

“We didn’t start the game very well. The mistake from the keeper and the players around him didn’t help us. We’ve been making these mistakes far too regularly. I am pleased that even though we made the mistake early, we responded and managed to come back into the game but we have to score more goals.

On Man of the Match, Liam Thomas:

“I told the boys at the end of the game how special he was today. We said he was the Man of the Match and I didn’t even ask him to comment on it because I think it was clear how well he performed today. He has been brilliant in training. His attitude and application in training has been second to none.

“He has worked so hard in training and it showed in the game today. I’ve made an example out of him to the lads because they should all be working that hard - he’s done a great job of setting the standards.”
