Getting to know Matt Millar

5 October 2020

Get to know new Town defender Matt Millar.

Shrewsbury Town Football Club were delighted to welcome Matt Millar to the club earlier today as he joined on loan from Newcastle Jets.

The defender made the move to Shropshire from the A-League outfit on a short-term loan deal until January.

The defender is pleased to be with the Shrews and is looking forward to working with his new team:

On joining the club:

“I am really glad the deal got done. It was a bit of a rush towards the end of the window. The trip here was long, around 30 hours, but I am glad I’m here.

“The facilities are awesome. We got to walk through them today and they look top-class. The training field looks great. I just walked out onto the pitch and the stadium looks great – I am really excited to be here.

“I want to hit the ground running. The biggest thing for me is to get out there and play some games. I want to contribute to the team and help us win games.

“The move came about after a lot of work from my agent. I’ve always wanted to come to England. It has always been a massive dream of mine. When this opportunity came to join Shrewsbury and play under Sam – I couldn’t say no.

“Sam has been really positive. I know he was a right-back when he played so I’m excited to learn off a player of his quality. He’s a good young coach who wants to play a positive brand of football.”

On settling in and developing further:

“I’ve almost got over the let-lag. Hopefully it won't take me long to find my feet. I’ll just have to get used to the rain and the weather here.

“I think I was a late bloomer. I’ve had a good couple of years now where I have established myself in the A-League. I think that is really going to help me take this opportunity.

“I want to keep progressing and keep getting better. The amount of games you play here is exciting. We only play around 25 games in the A-League. Playing games is what you want to do and that’s how you learn and get better. This is a really exciting opportunity. It’s quite a physical league here and that’s one of the things that excites me.”

On what the fans can expect:

“I’m a big-bodied athletic player. It’s all about contributing clean sheets. I am a defender so my intention is keeping as many clean sheets as possible.

“The fans can expect a big-bodied athletic player who will always give 100%. It’s a shame that we can't have the support of the fans in the stadium. It would be great to have the stadium packed out but hopefully we can get some fans in soon.”
