Brad Walker reflects on Town's 0-0 draw with Portsmouth on the opening day of the season.
On the opening day of the 20/21 Sky Bet League One season, Shrewsbury Town were held to a 0-0 draw by Kenny Jacketts’s Portsmouth.
Despite an end-to-end game, with chances for both sides, the points were shared as the final whistle was blown at Fratton Park.
Town midfielder Brad Walker was pleased with the Salop performance and feels his team can build on a positive start to the season.
On the result:
“I thought it was a very good away performance. – we started the game well. Towards the back end of the first half, they started to get back into it but the back four coped with it really well.
“I should have had a hat-trick! It’s a good performance and a clean sheet to start the season but we feel we were unlucky not have grabbed a few goals there as well.
“I did everything I could with the chance that hit the post. I attacked it well but unluckily it bounced off the post. I thought we were a threat on set-pieces throughout.
“One chance fell to Rekeil towards the end and he hit it as well as he could. The keeper made a great save and it didn’t fall for us.”
On consecutive starts and Matija Sarkic's debut:
“Yeah, I’m buzzing because I didn’t play much last season at all. This year I want to play as many games as possible. I was delighted to have started the first two games of the season.
“The Boro performance was really good baring the result and this one was quite dogged towards the end but it was a great away performance. We want to be right up there this season. Pre-season has been tough but we have all bought into it. We are always hard to beat and that is a great platform to work from.
“Sarkic was very good. We have very good competition for places in the squad this season. He got the clean sheet and we are all happy with that. He is a great goalkeeper from what I have seen and his performance summed that up.”
