Match report: Shrewsbury Town 1 Wigan Athletic 2

20 April 2021

Shrewsbury Town lose out 1-2 to Wigan Athletic.

Despite a valiant come-back, Shrewsbury Town were unable to overturn Wigan's two first-half goals.

Town came inches away from making the score one-nil with less than 20 minutes on the clock. Dan Udoh picked the pocket of the Wigan centre-half, took the ball forward and struck a shot under pressure - forcing the keeper into a smart save.

It was Wigan who took the lead. A corner from the left-hand side was swung in and found Will Keane inside the Town box. The striker made no mistake heading the Latics in front.

Just before the half-time whistle, Salop came within inches from equalising when Matthew Pennington’s header was cleared off the line. The away side were then able to break, Callum Lang was the man up top. The frontman was played in and slotted the ball home inside the side netting to double the away side's lead.

A triple change of Harry Chapman, Curtis Main and David Edwards gave the Shrews more firepower to start the second-half and that effort nearly paid off. Shaun Whalley went on a mazy run from the half-way line, beating a couple of men along the way and cutting into towards the Latics goal. His curled shot had to be tipped round the post for a corner.

Charlie Caton was so close to saving the day with the minutes ticking away. The Salop Academy graduate got on the end of a cross, headed towards the bottom corner and the keeper produced a great save to deny him his first goal for the club.
