Brian Caldwell update on Ipswich Town fixture postponement

13 February 2021

Brian Caldwell provides an update on Town's postponed fixture with Ipswich Town.

Shrewsbury Town Football Club can confirm today's Sky Bet League One fixture with Ipswich Town has been postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Brian Caldwell is disappointed the fixture has been postponed but understands the referee's decision to postpone the fixture.

On the game being postponed:

“We covered the pitch last Tuesday, when we looked underneath it looked okay in most parts. We tried to delay taking the covers off as long as possible - as even at quarter to ten this morning it was minus there.

“We took the covers off at 11’o’clock, the majority of the pitch was okay. There were some small areas where it was slightly firmer than others. The referee then arrived at quarter to 12, and at the time,  he felt the pitch was playable.

“Unfortunately, the pitch hardened up and some of the areas by the touchlines got worse. Rhen by quarter past, the pitch was not going the way we expected it to - even though the temperature had increased.

“It's just unfortunate as there was a lot of work to get the game to go ahead today but the weather is just something that we can’t control."

On the referee leaving it as late as possible:

“it’s just disappointing that 95% of the pitch is okay but we have to look after player safety. If anyone feels it is dangerous to play these games, then we have to take precautions for everybody."

On any information regarding a replay:

“We spoke to Ipswich about playing the game tomorrow. At first, they seemed up for it, but due to the short notice, we may have to look to a rearranged midweek game on a Tuesday night or something. We can sometimes beat teams but we can’t always beat the weather."
