Pre-season training underway

5 July 2021

Andy Johnson and Matthew Pennington talk through the start of the Salop pre-season campaign.

Steve Cotterill, his coaching staff, and the Salop squad all returned for the launch of pre-season at the beginning of the month as Town prepare for the Sky Bet League One journey.

The Shrews pre-season schedule will see Salop take on AFC Telford United, Tamworth Football Club and Hereford FC all away from home building into the 2021/22 season.

Town's Fitness Coach Andy Johnson and Salop defender Matthew Pennington caught up with iFollow Shrews to give an insight into returning to work for the season ahead.

"The first few days give you the opportunity to see where the lads are after the off-season," said Andy. "It was an odd season last year. We gave them all some downtime but they've all come back in good shape - that gives us a good place to build from.

"We have five weeks, so we will build their base and make sure they all have the capacity to go for 90 minutes. We will sharpen them up, they will become more powerful and better sprinters. By the time Button roles around, we will be ready to go."

After a successful loan spell with Salop, Matthew Pennington made his move to Shropshire permanent. Now a Town player, Matthew gave his insight into the first day's training. "I am feeling good and it's good to be back," Matthew continued. "It's really good to have the Gaffer back. Getting back into the building and getting some running into the legs has been refreshing.

"After the first two weeks of downtime, we started doing running sessions and we would send them into AJ on Strava. We had gym work to do, we've been keeping fit. We are ready to go and we all feel good."
