Lewis Duberry earns international call-up

16 March 2021

Town under-18 midfielder Lewis Duberry earns Montserrat international call-up.

Shrewsbury Town Football Club is delighted to confirm Salop under-18 midfielder Lewis Duberry has been called up to the senior Montserrat national team for their 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Antigua and El Salvador at the end of March.

The 18-year-old is described as a technically gifted and exciting center-midfield player and will look to display his talent on the international stage with the Emerald Boys. Duberry joined the academy as a scholar after previously playing at QPR, Norwich, Fulham, and Leyton Orient.

Duberry is delighted to have received an international call-up and is looking forward to linking up with his country at the end of the month.

On the call-up:

"I am very pleased for myself and for my family. It's always something I've wanted to do and I can't wait to play in the qualifiers and do my best for the country. I previously played in the under-20 qualifiers last year in a CONCACAF tournament. I did well and it was nice to be invited to be with the first-team.

"The first game is against Antigua and the second is against El Salvador. In June we play Grenada as well. I am very excited about the games. World Cup qualifiers are a big thing and everyone wants to play in them. It's a tiny country but everyone loves football.

"Everyone is excited about the up-and-coming games and I am excited to get out there and play. I speak to Willie Donachie a lot and he has been telling me what to do. He told me just to enjoy it and play with freedom. Everyone from the Town academy has congratulated me because it's a big thing for myself and the Club. I have to keep working hard and opportunities like this will come.

"My dad is from Montserrat and it's a dream come true for him to see his son playing for the country. He was born there, so it's brilliant for myself and my family."

"It's great for him and it's a great opportunity for him. He had a tough time at the start of the year with injuries but he's now back to better levels of fitness and he's earned this opportunity. It will be an unbelievable experience for him."
