Chairman officially opens STITC 3G pitch

20 May 2021

Chairman Roland Wycherley MBE officially opens Shrewsbury Town in the Community's full-size 3G pitch.

Shrewsbury Town's Chairman, Roland Wycherley MBE, formerly opened Shrewsbury Town in the Community's new full-size 3G pitch alongside Vice Chairman Paul Delves, Club President Mal Starkey and Salop CEO Brian Caldwell.

With a new state-of-the-art surface, Town's community programme will now have another facility enabling the people of Shropshire to play football in a safe, secure and inspiring environment.

Along with the renovated pitches at the Community Football Hub, Town's official charity partners now boast numerous facilities for the community of Shrewsbury and Shropshire to use on a regular basis - allowing Jamie Edwards and his team to utilise the power of sport to engage, inspire and strengthen our local community.

The 3G pitch will provide a home for our community projects and programmes as well as providing footballing space to over 30 local junior teams.

Town CEO Brian Caldwell and Shrewsbury Town in the Community CEO Jamie Edwards were delighted with the outcome of the project and provided an insight into how the project came to fruition.

"Shrewsbury Town in the Community are massive for us and they bring many people to the Football Club through various programmes," said Brian. "Having a new facility like this with a full-size pitch will bring even more people to the stadium. It will be great to see the local and wider community coming to the stadium and using this facility."

Shrewsbury Town in the Community CEO Jamie Edwards added: "It marks the start of a new era really. It allows us to grow and develop our projects and offer support to even more residents. It also means there will be more time and financial investment into the women's team.

"We are hoping that the Senior Women’s Team will be able to play for free for the first time in Shrewsbury Town's history. Everyone is going to have the opportunity to represent Shrewsbury Town. We want to champion our Women’s team and have ambitious plans for them moving forwards. It's a fantastic pitch with the backdrop of the stadium. It will be inspirational for everyone.

"The project is a culmination of years of work, from the planning and application stage through to handover. Shropshire Council, Football Foundation, Premier League and Shrewsbury Town FC have all been great in helping us to get this project across the line and I’m sure all of our users will agree when they first step onto the pitch, that the project has been completed to an exceptional standard.

"The future looks extremely promising for not only our Community Trust but also for football within Shropshire and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible with your boots on in the near future.”

Shrewsbury Town in the Community would like to give a special thank you to the Chairman for attending the opening of the pitch and performing the ribbon-cutting ceremony!
