Match preview: Charlton Athletic

26 November 2021

Take a look at a stats and facts ahead of Town's Sky Bet League One home fixture with Charlton Athletic.

Shrewsbury Town face their second Sky Bet League One home game in five days on Saturday as they welcome Charlton Athletic to Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Salop had a positive result in midweek when they drew 1-1 with play-off chasing Sunderland despite playing the whole of the second half with 10 men after David Davis was shown a straight red in first half stoppage time. It was a game that afterwards Town manager Steve Cotterill said was the ‘best result we’ve had since I’ve come to the club’.

Shrewsbury Town now face another difficult task against a Charlton side who are unbeaten in their past seven league games.

The Addicks are currently 14th in the league table and come into this one after a midweek 2-2 draw against Morecambe.

A rocky start to the league season saw Charlton in the relegation zone and after a 3-2 loss at home to Accrington Stanley in mid-October which saw the Addicks have only two wins in 13 games, manager Nigel Adkins was sacked, and former club captain Johnnie Jackson was appointed as interim manager.

Since Jackson’s appointment, Charlton have gone on to win four matches and draw two in the league, pulling them clear of the relegation zone. That period included an incredible 2-0 win over then league leaders Plymouth Argyle.

Salop were unlucky not to have come away from Tuesday’s came against Sunderland with all three points despite spending half of the game with 10 men, and with several injuries starting to hit the club as well, Cotterill will be hoping his men can come up with another good performance against Charlton on Saturday.

Name: Charlton Athletic

Founded: 1905 (116 years ago)

Chairman: Thomas Sandgaard

Record Victory: 8-0 vs Stevenage, EFL Trophy, October 2018

Record Defeat: 1-11 vs Aston Villa, Football League Second Division, November 1959

One to Watch: Jayden Stockley

Having joined initially on loan from Preston North End in January, Stockley made the move permanent in June on a three-year deal. He’s had a stellar start to his first full season with Charlton and is the clubs top goal scorer with eight goals in all competitions.

A potent striker, Stockley will step up when he’s most needed and Salop will have a tricky time on Saturday keeping the 28-year-old quiet.
