Salop to support Her Game Too

17 September 2021

Shrewsbury Town Football Club to support the Her Game Too initiative!

Shrewsbury Town Football Club is delighted to announce that we have partnered with HerGameToo, a campaign created to highlight the sexist abuse that continues to take place in football.

HerGameToo was founded by 12 passionate female football fans; who are committed to growing the campaign with the aim of fostering an ethos in football in which women are welcomed and respected equally.

HerGameToo aims to:

  • Create awareness
  • Educate
  • Research
  • Develop a strong sense of community
  • Create regular content to champion women in football (players, staff AND fans)
  • Create strong relationships with clubs
  • Create strong relationships with club trusts and communities
  • Have a presence at football grounds and sports bars to build a more welcoming environment for young girls and women
  • Continue to campaign against sexism in football
  • Continue to campaign against online abuse

The campaign was launched in May 2021 to widespread support on social media - leading to the campaign's hashtag of #HerGameToo trending on Twitter in the build-up to the Emirates FA Cup final and launch video for the campaign gaining over 1 million views.

Since the campaign's launch, #HerGameToo has surveyed just under 400 female football fans to build a wider picture of the experiences they have faced when attending games.

Helen Hall, Female representative and member of the Supporters Inclusion Committee at Shrewsbury Town Football Club added:

"Shrewsbury Town Football Club is delighted to form this partnership with #HERGAMETOO and intends to work hard to support the campaign to stop sexism in football.

"The campaign fits well with our desire at Shrewsbury Town to continue to build on our reputation as a family-friendly Club, a Club that wants everyone attending matches and supporting the team to do so in a safe, welcoming and comfortable environment - a place where everyone is treated with respect.

"What we must remember is that abuse doesn’t always come from someone you see and can identify. We must not forget that it is often the online abuse so easily aimed anonymously that can be hardest to eradicate but we must continue to try and by highlighting the issue of sexism in football through the #HERGAMETOO campaign. We will start to make progress and achieve an atmosphere where women are welcomed and respected equally in all aspects of the beautiful game."

Throughout the season Shrewsbury Town will look to support HerGameToo spread the message with a dedicated HerGameToo fixture as well as helping to spread the message in and around the ground with, posters, advertisement boards and features on the Club website and programme.

We ask all female supporters to take two minutes out of their day and fill out the survey below so we can look to make any improvements neccessary for your match day experience.
