Josh Vela spoke to the media after today's game with Sunderland

15 April 2022

Shrewsbury Town midfielder Josh Vela spoke to the press on the back of Friday’s 3-2 defeat away to Sunderland AFC.

Vela scored Salop’s first goal of the afternoon before a stoppage-time goal from the hosts stole all three points.

The midfielder spoke about the game and how deflating it was for the team to concede so late on.

Initial thoughts on the game:

"[We’re] really gutted that we didn’t come away with any points today. The first 20 minutes were a disaster but after that, we’ve had chances and we’ve got back into the game. To be sucker-punched like that at the end, everyone’s down in there [the dressing room] and it’s disappointing."

On his goal:

"[I’ve] just seen Nursey [George Nurse] on the left, he got the ball and I’ve just seen the space to get into the box, and obviously it’s come to me. Usually, I smash it the over the bar but this time I’ve side-footed it into the corner so obviously I’m happy it’s gone in - it’s a goal - but gutted with the result."

On what Easter weekend is like for players:

"It’s just a busy one. Obviously, we’ll get back late tonight, then I’ll have a day with the family tomorrow and then back to training on Sunday. Then [we’ve got] the game on Monday. It’s all thick and fast but it’s always been like that so I’m used to it."
