Chey Dunkley looks ahead to his first Salop home league game

5 August 2022

New signing, Chey Dunkley, previews his competitive home debut for Shrewsbury Town as they welcome Accrington to Shropshire.

New Salop centre-back, Dunkley, will make his competitive home debut for Town tomorrow afternoon when he takes to the Montgomery Waters Meadow pitch.

In his competitive debut for Town, Dunkley was part of a defence that reduced Morecambe to just two shots on goal and kept a clean sheet away from home.

Dunkley discussed tomorrow's game, last week's point and clean sheet at Morecambe, and his footballing partnerships within Town's defensive unit.

On Accrington:

"It'll be a good one for me personally, to actually play my first game at Shrewsbury in the league [since signing]. It'll be a tough game. Every game in League One is tough and they'll come to impose themselves and try to get the three points as much as we will be so we need to be prepared, come out victorious, and get the three points.

"They're an honest bunch, they work hard and you've seen it with the Accrington team, they'll always work hard for their manager and I don't think he wants anything less, John Coleman, so I think it's always a tough game, whether they're away or at home.

"Accrington will always have players who are coming through the ranks and they'll always have stars of the future and they're always going to do well so it's going to be a really tough game for us, no doubt about that, we've just got to make sure we're ready for whatever their game plan is."

On Morecambe:

"We can't disregard a point of course. We wanted to go there and get three points but as you know in football, it's not always that easy. Morecambe made it hard for us, they had one or two chances themselves but we felt like we'd created enough in the game, we just couldn't hit the back of the net. We've looked at where we could be better and where we can improve - we're a team who's always looking to improve - and hopefully, we can make that point a good one with a victory this Saturday.

On Shrewsbury's defensive unit:

"We've been working hard in pre-season. We're always doing extensive work and the gaffer's been working hard for us to get better not just defensively but offensively too so hopefully that can continue. I'm playing with some good players so that's always going to help me and help me with confidence. We got a clean sheet in the last game and I'm a defender first so that's always the aim and I'm delighted we've started off with that."
