Steve Cotterill previews tomorrow's clash with Derby County

15 August 2022

Steve Cotterill spoke to the press ahead of the game against Derby County on Tuesday at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Town will be coming back to Shropshire after grabbing all three points against Wycombe on Saturday thanks to goals from Matt Pennington and Luke Leahy.

The gaffer spoke to the media about his thoughts on the win against Wycombe, the Derby game, back-to-back wins, captain Luke Leahy's importance within the group and finally the fixture congestion.

The win on Saturday:

“A lot was already spoken about in the post-match press conference but yeah, a good win for us, and if you look back on it, they had four players who played on Tuesday night and we had nine, so it was a huge effort from our boys in that heat on Saturday. We are pleased with everyone and pleased for everyone.”

Derby game coming up:

“We can take the positives if we win I suppose, but this is before the game. I have great respect for Derby County as it’s a huge club with fantastic tradition, so we know it's going to be a tough game. We have to deal with that before we play Ipswich on the weekend, but I have full respect for them. They have some good lads playing for them and I know a few of them but it’s a game we are looking forward to.”

A tough round of fixtures upcoming:

“At the end of the day, whoever you play, I don’t know an easy game. I have never had an easy game as a manager even when you go and win the game convincingly, when you look back on the games the opponents have their moments anyway."

Back-to-back wins:

“Yeah, it's (the start to the season) funny. We have a couple of wins and everyone is happy with how we start the season, and yet we had a draw and got beaten one nil and played 30 minutes with ten men in a game where we deserved to win and all of a sudden, we haven't had a good start to the season.

"What we have done is have an okay start but the mood changes obviously when we have a couple of wins and that’s understandable for everybody. That helps the players with their confidence going forward so we are certainly pleased we have got a couple of wins and now we know we have got a good week ahead of us.”
