Steve Cotterill reflects on today's game with Ipswich

20 August 2022

Steve Cotterill spoke to the press after today's game at home to Ipswich.

After picking up four points from their fixtures against Wycombe and Derby County, Salop fell to a 3-0 defeat against Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The Shrewsbury boss said he was disappointed with the game but praised Tom Bloxham after he made his 50th appearance for the club.

Thoughts on the game:

"They were better than us. That's the bottom line. They have better players and squad. When you come up against them, you hope they have an off day or something goes wrong and we have to play above ourselves.

"I'm not sure we were physically capable of doing that today. I think we looked a yard off everything from the start of the game. They were sharper with every loose ball and more crisp with their passing.

"Obviously, when they get the first goal, it becomes even more difficult as they can change their team around and make substitutions as they don't get any weaker, they don't let up, and they have a really strong squad for this division."

How many chances Salop reduced them to:

"We are disappointed with the goals today as the goals have come from areas where we defended so well the other night. I don't know if we had the legs or energy for the game today. It has been a long, demanding, month. Today is the first time I looked at the team about 15 minutes in, and it looked like the month had caught up with us. I think we had a really demanding week with Wycombe and Derby and today; it's a really tough run for this division. It looked like it caught up with us today."

Ryan Bowman's return:

"He trained yesterday so he was okay to be on the subs bench today after he completed the training session, so that's the bonus side of it."

Tom Bloxham making his 50th appearance:

"That's good. He is a kid, he was fresh-faced coming in as he was 17 when we gave him his debut and he is 18 now, but he didn't have a lot of impact when he came on in the game today. He could have done a couple of things a little better.

"Charlie Caton coming on today as well. He is another good young boy, so it's not ideal for them to come on in that situation and for too long as well. You have to bleed them in gently sometimes - the young players - but we are really pleased with the pair of them and pleased for Tom to get to 50 games at such a young age.

"The overriding point of today's game will always be disappointment because we lost the game."
