Steve Cotterill reflects on tonight's draw with Derby County

16 August 2022

Steve Cotterill spoke to the press after this evening's 0-0 at home to Derby County.

Steve Cotterill's side and the visitors played out an entertaining 0-0 draw at Montgomery Waters Meadow on Tuesday evening.

The manager gave his thoughts on the match and provided an update on Ryan Bowman and Aiden O'Brien who were both absent from the squad tonight.

On the game:

"I thought it was an entertaining 0-0 draw. A lot of football was played, mostly by Derby County, so we had to keep our discipline and by doing that we had the better chances in the game tonight. I think, on another occasion, a fitter and sharper Dan Udoh would take one of those chances. Dan's had a real stop-start pre-season with that ankle problem but hopefully, we've got to the bottom of that now.

"The game will do Dan the world of good. I thought he, Rekeil Pyke, Jordan Shipley and Tom Bayliss were immense attacking flair players tonight. The goalkeeper and the back five will always get the credit for the clean sheet but that started with them tonight. In the end I thought we could've won it. We had the better chances.

"Thankfully tonight we kept a clean sheet. Another point against a team who will be looking to win this league and with Ipswich Town on Saturday, they'll also be looking to win the league, not just get promoted. To be honest, they're Premier League clubs, both of them.

"I don't think they (Derby County) did (have a lot of chances). The ones Marko's (Marosi) had to save are ones I'd expect him to make. When I look at how many looks they've had at our goal, they didn't have much for a team who had the bulk of the possession tonight. That was really pleasing because I think we gave Wycombe too much of a look at our goal and we didn't give Derby a look tonight."

On Shrewsbury's recent form:

"We're building. I thanked the boys in there for their efforts tonight. That was the major thing I had to say to them tonight because they gave the football club absolutely everything tonight. We're still building because of the number of new signings that have come in."

On Ryan Bowman:

"The injury to Ryan Bowman isn't severe. He's tweaked his back and it's gone round into his hip and groin a little bit. We're just hoping it's not a groin strain but it's come from his back we think. He might've moved and jarred it. There's nothing major wrong with him though."

On Aiden O'Brien:

"I wanted to wait until we knew for sure what was happening with Aiden. He might be out for six weeks but let's just see how it goes. He's had the operation and it went well which is good. He's just got to take it easy for the first week."
