Pre Lincoln | Tom Bayliss

2 December 2022

Tom Bayliss met with the press ahead of tomorrow's game with Lincoln City at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Shrewsbury Town head into their fixture against Lincoln City off the back of a good win against Peterborough United in the FA Cup

Tom Bayliss, Luke Leahy and Matt Pennington all netted their fourth goals of the season during that win and 'Bayls' is hoping his side can replicate the performance and result tomorrow.

The attacking midfielder, who joined the club in June, spoke about last weekend's victory and reflected on his time at Shrewsbury Town so far.

On the win against Peterborough:

"To progress in any cup competition is what we want here. We want to go as deep as possible in the competition. It's good for the fans and the draw is good because it's at home and it's a winnable game. Hopefully, we can do that and get one of the big boys."

On goal scoring:

"That is what I want to do this season, I have targets I want to hit and at the minute I am on track for that. I'm really enjoying it and contributing in any way I can.

"I was a bit gutted after the game because I thought Penno (Matthew Pennington) was on five after his goal. We all wind him up about being the top goal scorer but it's nice. We're getting goals in the group from everywhere so it is a good place to be.

"There are a lot of different attacking threats in our team, even at wing-back and from set pieces. We have the three boys who come up from the back and we should probably have scored more goals in that area as well. We have a good threat all over the pitch and that is always nice."

On his progression since signing:

"It was a tough period for me before I signed here. I didn't play as much football as I would have liked. But I am really enjoying working for the manager, and the dressing room is really good and close-knit.

"I'm getting back to where I was before, and that is where I want to be. I know I can get to those levels. If I'm improving that is only going to help the team."

On settling in:

"It's different in different clubs. I think it was pretty easy here because the manager made it pretty clear what he wanted from me and I knew a few of the boys that had signed here earlier in the summer. It has been brilliant, there are no bad eggs in the group so it has been pretty easy."

On the start to the season:

"I think if you look at the table, it's probably a bit of an unfair reflection on the performances over the last month. The results have not gone our way based on the performances we have put in. But it's football, you need to win games, and that's what we are looking to do going through December.

"We spoke about it recently if we can put a run together, we will be right back in the mix and everyone will be talking about us again. We know we are performing well - we just need to turn that into wins.

"It's a confidence thing maybe, we believe that we have a really good group here and that we can do something a bit special here this year. It's coming along nicely and that is what we all want, we all want to win football games. Sometimes you win not playing well and other times you lose playing well, but at the end of the day it's a results business, it's always better after a win than a loss.

"I think we have a really good chance of picking up three points on Saturday if we perform well."

On the injuries plaguing the squad:

"Injuries are part and parcel of the game, we have had serious injuries here this season which are going to leave a few players out for the season. You want a bigger squad and you want competition for places, and the lads we have lost would have played big parts this season, but we have got good back up, and we have good team spirit, and you see that gel now on the pitch.

"I wasn't here last season, but I know Daniel Udoh scored a lot of goals, so it is good the goals are coming from all over the pitch."
