Aaron Wilbraham previews tomorrow's game at home to Portsmouth

21 February 2022

Shrewsbury Town assistant manager Aaron Wilbraham spoke to the press ahead of Tuesday night’s game at home to Portsmouth.

Both Salop and Pompey had their games at the weekend postponed due to waterlogged pitches at Montgomery Waters Meadow and at the Mornflakes Stadium – the home of Crewe Alexandra, where Portsmouth travelled at the weekend.

Thus, Town come into the fixture off the back of a narrow loss away at Plymouth Argyle two weekends ago and Portsmouth’s last game was at home to Doncaster Rovers; they won 4-0.

Wilbraham talked about Saturday’s postponement, tomorrow’s fixture, and praised George Nurse’s performances this season.

On Saturday’s postponement:

“It’s always disappointing when a game gets called off. The lads were prepared and ready to play the game but obviously, when the referee makes that decision, you have to accept it and get on with it and it’s disappointing when we’re all at the game and ready to play but we’ve just got to get on with it. It’s just disappointing because you’ve done everything up until the point of kicking off of the game but obviously you can’t do anything about the weather so you just move on to the next game and start to get a plan and preparation in for that one.”

On Portsmouth:

“Their game got called off as well but they’ll have to travel back [to Portsmouth] and then back up to play us so they’ll be looking forward to a game and both sets of players will be fresh so it should be a good game.

“We gave a good account of ourselves down there and played really well and were unlucky not to get anything from the game. We lost due to an early goal and they’ve got some dangerous players as we know. We’ll look forward to the game tomorrow night and hope to put on a good performance ourselves.”

On George Nurse:

“Nursey has been really consistent, he’s put in some great performances and he’s played in various positions and he has always done well wherever he’s played and long may that continue. I think he’s really improved under the manager – as a lot of the players have – and I think we’ve just got to keep churning out these performances and start getting some wins.

"I think he’s calm in possession and he’s getting better when it comes to the defensive side of his game and he shoots all the time in training – he’s got a great strike – so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see goals from him at some point but yeah, he’s done really well so far.”
