Match Preview | Wycombe Wanderers

8 February 2022

Shrewsbury Town are back in Sky Bet League One action on Tuesday night as they travel promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers at the Adams Park Stadium.

Salop are looking to get back to winning ways after drawing with Fleetwood Town at Montgomery Waters Meadow on Saturday. Wycombe on the other hand haven’t played since last Saturday and have lost their previous two league fixtures, at home to MK Dons (1-0) last weekend and a shock 3-2 away defeat to struggling Morecambe Town two weeks ago.

Steve Cotterill’s side are currently 16th in the league table and will be looking to further pull away from the teams below them with a win on Tuesday.

Gareth Ainsworth men are looking to get back to the second tier following relegation from the Championship on the final day of last season. Wanderers currently occupy the final play-off place in sixth place; however, they have a game in hand over MK Dons, Sunderland, and Oxford United who sit in third, fourth, and fifth place respectively and win against Salop could take them into third.

Name: Wycombe Wanderers

Founded: 1887 (134 years ago)

Chairman/Owner: Rob Couhig

Biggest Win: 5-0 vs Burnley, Division Two, 15th April 1997

Biggest Defeat: 0-7 vs. Shrewsbury Town, Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Southern Section 2nd Round, 7th October 2008.

Highest League Finish: 22nd, Sky Bet Championship, 2020/21

Key Player: Sam Vokes

Having struggled for form and goals at Championship side Stoke City in recent years, Vokes joined Wycombe in the summer and has found both form and goals in his short time with the Chairboys. He is Wycombe’s top goalscorer this season with eight goals whilst also contributing three assists.

Whilst Vokes isn’t the quickest player in the league, his physicality and ability to hold up the ball are enough to cause problems for any team and that has made Wycombe one of the favourites to get promoted come the end of the season.
