Matt Pennington looks back on yesterday's win away at Burton Albion

27 February 2022

Matt Pennington spoke to the media after yesterday’s 2-0 win away at Burton Albion.

Town’s right-centre-back popped up with his side’s second goal of the game after bundling the ball home just before the hour mark.

He was also part of the defence who kept a clean sheet at the Pirelli Stadium - Salop’s fourth in their last nine games.

Pennington praised a good away performance and said he was pleased to give the travelling support something to shout about.

On the game:

“[I’m] really pleased with it. We needed a win today and thankfully the lads dug in, gave a good performance and we gave those fans something to shout about.

“We knew what sort of game it was going to be today when we saw the pitch. They’ve got a long throw and they put the ball in the box, put it where it’s dangerous, so we knew we had to stand up to that if we were going to win the game.

“It’s [the clean sheet] massive, even the subs who came on you know, [Aaron] Pierre did a good header to save us a goal so it was a team effort to get the clean sheet today, not just the back five. Everyone was defending well, doing their jobs and that’s what we need to do to get those performances and those results. [It was] a really good away performance I thought, we’ve not had many of those but it was good to give those fans something to shout about – they were brilliant.”

On his goal:

“No, it wasn’t already over the line, it’s just whether I should’ve let it spin over the line but I was there to tap it in, to make sure and you’ve got to be in those positions to score so yeah, it was good. We’ll take that all day.”

On Tom Bloxham:

“I think his performances are growing and he’s getting better and better and it was a great finish for the goal. His all-round play and his understanding of the game are getting better. The gaffer is on to him all the time and he’s a really good lad who’s doing really well.”
