Matty Bondswell | First Interview

3 February 2022

Matty Bondswell conducted his first Salop interview and explained how excited he is to have joined Shrewsbury Town on loan.

Bondswell signed for Town from Newcastle United Under-23s on deadline day last month and will remain here until the end of the season.

The young left-back has had an exotic career so far having played in England, Germany, and the Netherlands already.

Speaking to Town fans for the first time, Bondswell was full of compliments about the club and said he was really looking forward to getting started.

On the move:

“I’m delighted [to be here]. I’m really looking forward to getting started and seeing how I can help the team and I’m really looking forward to being in a first-team environment. It all happened pretty fast. We knew that I could be going somewhere - we just weren’t sure where - but once we found out I’d be coming down here to Shrewsbury I was excited about the opportunity. I really love it here, I think the facilities are actually top class – I was pleasantly surprised – you’ve got everything you need here. I enjoyed it [his first training session], the lads really looked after me and every single one of them made sure to introduce themselves and made me feel welcome. On the pitch, they were helping me out with pointers and advice, just so I can get settled in quickly. There are definitely a couple of personalities in the team! One thing I noticed straight away is that the team is really tight-knit and they’ve bonded really well, so that’s one thing I’m looking forward to getting integrated into.

“The gaffer said I’m going to have to work hard – obviously. He said he’s looking forward to working with me, coaching me, and helping me improve so hopefully when I go back to Newcastle I’ll be in a better position.

“My targets are just to work as hard as possible and develop myself as much as possible and help the team in any way I can. The main thing for me is to work hard, it’s the first time I’ve been in a proper first-team environment so it’s just about getting settled in as soon as I can and going from there. I’d like to say I’m an intense player, I work with 100% energy all the time, I like going forwards and I’d back myself in any 1v1 situation as well; they’re things I can really help the team with. I’d say I’ve got a lot of pace, I’m good going forwards and good defensively – you’ve got to do both as a wingback.”
