Steve Cotterill reflects on today's narrow loss away at Plymouth Argyle

12 February 2022

Shrewsbury Town boss Steve Cotterill spoke to the media after today’s narrow 1-0 defeat away at Plymouth Argyle.

Town defended well but the manager feels his side made a mistake that cost them that crucial goal.

Salop also created plenty of opportunities to score themselves however they lacked the deceive touch on Saturday afternoon.

Aside from these two observations, Cotterill praised the fans who travelled down for the game as well as Josh Daniels and Tom Flanagan.

On the game:

“We made a mistake for their goal – we can’t afford to make mistakes. We haven’t got back in, got the wrong side, and given them a free shot on the edge of the box that they haven’t had in the rest of the 90 minutes.

“At the moment, we’re not getting the ball in the back of the net. We’re creating enough chances, [there are] enough balls whizzing across the box for us to be getting touches on. Mistake for the goal – one mistake – and it’s ended up in the back of our net. We’ve ended up creating chances today and albeit they might be half chances, they [Plymouth] haven’t created anything either to open the game up and that shot has fallen to them on the edge of the box and they’ve ended up putting it away and then it’s an uphill task; you’re away from home, partisan crowd, and all of a sudden they’re trying to slow the game and we’re trying to up the tempo and we didn’t get enough in it to get the equaliser.

“We’re not putting them [our chances] away at the moment. I think we’re reliant on a certain couple of people and we can’t be reliant on them. There are other people who can take shots and pass it and take responsibility themselves and also get in the box and get their head on things you know. We’ve ended up with a couple of fantastic deliveries today and we should score from them, we should score from them. It’s a problem.

“We can’t make any excuses up about the weather but when we come away from home, we had a good following that came down from Shrewsbury today bless them in all that weather, and we wanted to make sure we sent them home with something but we haven’t been able to do that today.”

On Josh Daniels and Tom Flanagan:

“I thought Josh Daniels did well when he came in today, gave an extra bit of attacking thrust down that left-hand side and I thought Tom Flanagan did well when he came on today as well.”
