Aaron Wilbraham previews Saturday's trip to Crewe Alexandra

13 January 2022

Assistant Manager Aaron Wilbraham spoke to the press ahead of Town's short trip up the road to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.

Salop head into the fixture off the back of the glitz and glamour of Liverpool away last weekend in the Emirates FA Cup.

Crewe hosted Charlton Athletic on Wednesday night and picked up a narrow 2-1 win, surviving a late scare as Charlton saw a potential equaliser ruled out in stoppage time at the end of the game.

Wilbraham says Town now need to focus on their league form and reiterated the importance of going into the fixture with the right attitude.

On the fixture:

“It’s back to business for the lads. We’ve had a really good run in the league, so we want to get back to our league form and concentrate on that. Obviously, Liverpool was a great day for everybody at the club, a great day out and I think that although we weren’t happy with the result – we never like getting beaten – it was a great occasion for everybody involved and now we concentrate on Crewe on Saturday

“They’ve [Crewe Alexandra] had a midweek game, but they’ll definitely be high on confidence after getting that win, so we’ve got to go into it with the right attitude, put last week behind us, and focus on our league form and that’s all we’ve got to do.

“I think when you’ve got a lead, you’ve always got to fight to keep it and they managed to see the game out last night and they’ll be happy with the three points. We’ve just got to go there with the right attitude and get the right result on Saturday.

“They’ve got some good players, they’ve always been a good footballing side, they like to play good football so we’re aware of that. We’ve faced them quite a lot recently and we’ve watched them recently as well, so we’ll do the same preparation we do for every game and go into it with a game plan.

“[Preparation is going] really well, we’ve got the lads rested from Sunday, and today we’ve started to turn it around and do a bit of prep for Saturday’s game, so everybody is fresh and looking forward to Saturday.

“We’ve given the lads a little bit of rest and then we’ve done a little bit of match preparation today and we’ve got tomorrow as well. It’s always nice when you’ve not got as quick a turnaround when you’re preparing for a game because you can get a bit more detail in.”

On the away ticket sales:

“It’s unbelievable from the fans. The lads still talk about Cheltenham away when they came out for the warm-up and the fans were already in the ground singing their names, they remember that day being a special occasion and for them to go and sell out the Crewe away end is great from our supporters. As I’ve said many times before, it gives the lads a lift when they can hear our support going from the start of the game so hopefully, that’ll give us a good advantage on Saturday.”
