Luke Leahy previews Salop's FA Cup third round match away at Liverpool

8 January 2022

Luke Leahy spoke to the press before Sunday's big game at Anfield.

Leahy has played almost every game this season for Salop and has proved a versatile option for Steve Cotterill to consider since his arrival last summer. He's played in five different positions since the season began and picked up five goals and four assists across all competitions.

With the biggest game of the season on the horizon, Leahy says he's excited about the fixture and feels Salop are incredibly prepared for whatever may come.

On the game:

"I'm very excited, it doesn't come around too often so it's one we've got to enjoy and go in with confidence. It's been big [to have a full week to prepare]. Christmas was a tough period in terms of heavy pitches on the legs and we had a consistent side – which is always good – but to have a free week and go into the game on Sunday with a lot of training and a lot of preparation is a good thing. Credit to the coaching staff and the analysis team, they've left no stone unturned. We've analysed literally every player and every possibility that could face us, so we're prepared. They play for Liverpool for a reason, and we've got to give them respect no matter what team they put out. We've just got to enjoy the occasion no matter what team it is, we've got to enjoy Anfield and give them respect."

On the recent form:

"I think the sorts of performances we were putting in before this recent run deserved points but now we're getting rewarded for our performances and we just need to keep the run going. It's been a consistent couple of weeks for the majority of us really, it's been the same eleven and although boys are itching to get a starting place, I think the boys that have started have been doing really well. We're in a good position in the league and we're in a good position in terms of a squad away from the pitch, but we know now that the Gaffer is bringing in players, so we've all got to be on top of our game."

On his season so far:

"I'm really enjoying it, I'm just enjoying playing, whether it's in the middle of a back three or as a central midfielder or a left-wing-back, I'm just enjoying playing football. It's been different this season in terms of playing different positions but it's one that I'm really excited about. I set a goal to play as many games as possible and I'm doing that at the minute so hopefully it continues, and we have a strong second half of the season."
