Steve Cotterill reviews last night's game against Gillingham

26 January 2022

Steve Cotterill spoke to press after yesterday's draw away at Gillingham.

Shrewsbury Town and Gillingham played out a 0-0 draw at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium on Tuesday night.

The game lacked talking points as both sides searched for that crucial opening goal but, barring a couple of free-kicks, both goalkeepers had a quiet night.

Steve Cotterill said his side got the point they deserved and that they did a good job of defending their box against the Gills’ attacks.

On his side’s performance:

“Probably [deserved] no more than a point. We had to defend at times. It’s always a difficult game when you come away to Gillingham, they’re putting balls in your box from the first minute and you’ve got to make sure you defend your box and that’s the type of game it’s going to be when you come here.

“First half was when we had better opportunities to score but when we get into those areas, it’s difficult for me to comment on just what happens. We’ve had scenarios on Saturday and scenarios tonight where, when you’ve got Elliott Bennett on the ball – you don’t want too many better – but he normally picks out the right pass or puts in a great cross, and tonight, it’s coincided with Saturday where those crosses seem to be getting cut out, so that’ll be something we need to have a look at probably on the way back on the bus.

“It’s one of those games, you’ve got to defend your box, it’s a tough old game when you come here; they’ve got three home games against teams in and around them and they wanted nine points. They’re not getting the three off of us.”

On Gillingham:

“Steve [Lovell] has been in the job for a couple of games now and I actually think they’ll get better between now and the end of the season. I managed against Gillingham before when he wasn’t in charge and then in the same season they turned around and he’s done a really good job with the team. Coming here tonight, it was always going to be a difficult game for us, it didn’t end up being a very good game to watch but we were fantastic on Saturday and ended up getting nothing but thank small mercies we got a point today.”
