Match Report | Shrewsbury Town 1-3 Burnley

15 July 2022

Shrewsbury's pre-season campaign continued with a loss to Championship side Burnley.

Shrewsbury Town ended the night with a 3-1 defeat to Vincent Kompany’s Burnley at Montgomery Waters Meadow in their second friendly of pre-season.

In the early stages of the first half, Julien Dacosta received the ball on the right-hand side just inside Burnley half and had a long-range shot from outside the box. The shot tested Bailey Peacock Farrell but it just whistled over the bar.

Burnley opened the scoring in the 27th minute as Jay Rodriguez produced a flick-on pass to land at the feet of Josh Brownhill on the edge of the box who then fed a pass to Samuel Bastien who converted from inside the box to open the scoring for the Clarets.

One of Shrewsbury's best moves in the first half came from Marko Marosi who played a ball up to Ryan Bowman who turned and drove towards the Burnley goal he then laid the ball off to Dacosta who crossed from the right, but it had too much and went out on the other side.

Shrewsbury started brightly in the second half and opened the scoring within 30 seconds as Jordan Shipley got his first Salop goal which originated from a cross on the right-hand side and Shipley converted with a left-footed shot which landed in the top corner.

Salop were full of momentum from their early second-half lead which led Luke Leahy to have a shot from inside Shrewsbury's own half and it tested Will Norris but had too much power and dipped just over the bar.

On the hour mark, Burnley took the lead once again as substitute Ne-Jai Tucker converted from a low cross across the box. The Burnley move originated from a through ball and Ashley Barnes ran onto it and drove inside to then pass it out to the left-hand side for Charlie Taylor to cross to the back post.

In the 80th minute, Shrewsbury won the ball back high up the pitch and looked to attack but the Burnley defence fouled substitute Tom Bloxham which led to a free kick. The set play, which was taken by Tom Bayliss, could only find the Burnley wall.

Burnley had a corner from the left-hand side in the 84th minute which was taken by substitute Owen Dodgson who crossed the ball into the middle of the box for Bobby Thomas to head home to take the Clarets' lead to 3-1.
