Matt Pennington previews the first game of the season

29 July 2022

Matt Pennington spoke to the media ahead of tomorrow's game against Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium.

Pennington featured 51 times for Steve Cotterill's side last season in all competitions, mostly playing as the right-hand centre-back.

This season, he's had to build footballing relationships with Chey Dunkley as a new central centre-back, Julien Dacosta as a new right-wing-back, and Taylor Moore as a new defensive midfielder.

Pennington discussed the fixture, the aforementioned relationships, and the fans ahead of tomorrow's game.

On the fixture:

"[I'm] excited, yeah. It's been a while since we played a competitive fixture but all the boys are ready to go."

"It's that excitement of not playing for a while and you become like a kid again because you want to play football. We've enjoyed our time off and we've had a tough pre-season so we're ready to go."

On how relationships within the Salop squad are shaping up:

"It's a new team this year, it's different from last year. We've got relationships to build but I'm sure they'll keep improving and keep getting better but yeah, they're heading in the right direction. We just need those games now to solidify things and get ourselves going."

On the 5-0 win over Morecambe at Montgomery Waters Meadow:

"It was probably one of the games where we felt really comfortable. We needed a win that night and we put in a convincing performance so it was a memorable one, yeah."

On the fans selling out the original allocation of away tickets:

"The Salop faithful are always singing behind us and I'm sure it'll be the same this year and I'm sure it'll be a good year."
