Steve Cotterill reflects on Town's opening day point

30 July 2022

Steve Cotterill spoke to the media after today's draw away from home.

Shrewsbury Town drew 0-0 with Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium on Saturday afternoon, a result the Shrewsbury Town manager said he wasn't happy with, but would take.

Town dominated the game but couldn't find that decisive touch. Frontman, Dan Udoh was absent from the squad after having an injury injected but should be okay to return to training next week.

Cotterill discussed all of the above but also praised the 780 travelling Salop fans.

On the game:

"It's better than last year I suppose, wasn't it? I think in the end we deserved to win the game but only by a narrow scoreline because of the missed opportunities we presented to our teammates today. I thought we were the dominant side in possession and I like to think we had more shots than them. The only nervy bit we had was when we gave away a free kick we didn't need to and we had two corners and a wide freekick to defend. I thought we were better than we were here last year and we got our first point on the board. Obviously, in a new season, you want to get your first clean sheet, your first goal, and your first win. We've ticked one of those off so now we just need to get the other two next week.

"As Derek [Adams] alluded to, they need to do well at home so they're always going to be a handful and while they've got Cole Stockton, they're always a threat."

On the chances Shrewsbury had:

"It's easy to say now that I could see a goal coming, but I'd say I hoped there was one coming because we missed a few chances in the first half as well. In those wide areas, if we take a little bit more off the cross and maybe get a few more bodies in the box, but it's early days but we only needed one to go our way. I thought the performance was really good and we had five debutants today so I thought they did really well and they've worked really hard in pre-season.

On Dan Udoh:

"It's not bad news even though he wasn't in the squad. Dan went down to see a specialist in London last week who sent him across the city to the guy who does injections so he's had it injected. Five days after that injection, we've got to see if he can return to training - which will be Monday - but we need to let that injection settle."

On the 780 travelling fans:

"Brilliant! Brilliant support, we just wish we could've given them the three points to go home with. As I always say, winning isn't everything, but trying to win is, and we've tried to win today."
