An update from Ryan Bowman

13 June 2022

Ryan Bowman has provided an update to the Salopian Family following his heart surgery last week.

Ryan Bowman has today provided an update following his heart surgery last week. Back in October 2021, the football family came together to support Ryan after he had to be rushed to hospital with heart palpitations as Salop faced Ipswich Town at Portman Road. After rigorous tests, medication and a cautious approach back to training, Ryan was, fortunately, able to rejoin the squad and complete the 2021/22 season. However, it was agreed that this procedure would be necessary for the off-season to ensure Ryan would not experience this traumatic experience again.

How he's feeling now:

"I’m feeling ok, the first couple of days after the operation I was a little tired and it was tender around the area but I’m gradually getting there."

The procedure:

"The procedure was called an Ablation. It's a procedure to treat irregular heartbeat/palpitations. It burns away any electrical signals that cause irregular heartbeats. It helps maintain a normal heart rhythm. Luckily I didn’t have to stay overnight, the operation was first thing in the morning so once it had finished, I stayed in the hospital for around five hours afterwards to make sure everything was ok & got discharged the same evening."

Recovery:

"The recovery time is better than we all initially thought it was going to be, I need to stay off my feet for a week or 10 days then gradually get back to light jogging and build myself up so I'm hoping to be able to get straight into pre-season training with the lads if all goes well."

A weight off of his shoulders:

"It's like a big weight has been lifted off my shoulders since the operation, I’ve always had mild palpitations and an irregular heartbeat but nothing as extreme as I had it in the Ipswich game so to know that it won’t happen again is a big relief for me, the hospital team at Liverpool heart and chest surgery especially Dr Todd were amazing with me, they looked after me very well and I can’t thank them enough.

"I don’t know if any other football players have had the same procedure. We all know of some players to have suffered a similar thing if not worse than I had it which is awful."
