New signing, Chey Dunkley spoke to Salop shortly after putting pen to paper at Montgomery Waters Meadow.
On signing for Shrewsbury Town:
“I’m over the moon. I spoke to the Gaffer a few weeks ago, I spoke to my family and my close ones, and I had a few options, but it just felt like this was the right one for me so yeah, I’m buzzing and can’t wait to get started.”
“It’s a growing club and I know a few people who have been at this club - including some who are considered club legends like Dave Edwards - and I’ve got close friends like Conor Goldson who have been here. That calibre of player has only had good things to say about Shrewsbury. It’s a family club and they’re pushing in the right direction, to push the club to get promoted so it’s all been positive from what I’ve heard.”
On himself as a player:
“I’m committed, physical, I can pick a pass when I need to but with that comes experience and knowledge of the game. I watch a lot of football when I’m not playing. I’m dominant in the air and hopefully, I can chip in with a few goals here and there.”
On his goalscoring prowess:
“As a centre-half I don’t like to make up the numbers when going up for set pieces, I want to go up there with the intention to score. When I do go up, I’m not going up to make up numbers – I know a few centre-halves do go up to see if they can do something – so it has been something that has been a part of my game and hopefully that continues going forward.”
On Steve Cotterill:
“What sold it to me was that he’s also got promoted from this division – with Bristol City I believe – so he’s got experience of winning the league and I’ve got experience of winning the league. It’s going to be tough – there will be 12 to 15 teams who are striving to achieve what we’re trying to achieve but something else he brought to my attention was that it’s not a massive squad so that might open more doors for me to play more games. It’s not a given, I have to earn it, but I’ll work hard and make sure I’m a regular starter.”
