Match Preview | Cambridge United

4 March 2022

Following Tuesday’s impressive performance against league leaders Rotherham United at Montgomery Waters Meadow, Shrewsbury Town are back on the road in Sky Bet League One on Saturday as they travel to the Abbey Stadium to face Cambridge United.

Steve Cotterill’s side were unlucky not to snatch all three points against the runaway leaders, with George Nurse's strike against the post just before the hour mark coming closest to breaking the deadlock. On the back of last Saturday’s convincing 2-0 away win over Burton Albion as well, Salop will go into the game against Cambridge with confidence flowing through the squad.

Cambridge are currently 13th in the league table and are without a win in their past two league games, losing away to both Oxford United (4-2) and Wycombe Wanderers (3-0). But so far, they’re having a good first season in League One following their promotion from League Two last season.

The return fixture took place at Montgomery Waters Meadow back in October. A Ryan Bowman hat-trick and a strike from Luke Leahy secured an emphatic 4-1 victory against Mark Bonner’s side.

  • 0-7 vs Sunderland, League Cup Second Round, 2002

One to Watch: Sam Smith

The 23-year-old has hit a bit of a purple patch of late, scoring five goals in his last five appearances which have put him level as Cambridge’s top goalscorer this season with 13 goals alongside Joe Ironside. Ironside had been out for a while with an injury but returned on Tuesday off the bench against Wycombe.

With Ironside coming back to fitness and Smith being in fantastic form, they could become a dangerous strike partnership for the rest of the season.
