Match Preview | Oxford United

11 March 2022

Shrewsbury Town return to Montgomery Waters Meadow tomorrow as they welcome Oxford United to Shropshire in Sky Bet League One.

Steve Cotterill’s side come into this one on the back of a 0-0 away draw to Cambridge United last week in a result in which Salop were very unfortunate not to get all three points. Luke Leahy had a golden opportunity to snatch the three points in stoppage time when he was inches away from connecting with a Ryan Bowman header with his outstretched boot. It wasn’t to be, however, and the points were shared.

The U’s are having a brilliant season so far and are on course to make the playoffs for the third consecutive season as they currently sit in fourth place in the table. They are looking to break their duct this season though by making that final step to get back into the second division after getting knocked out in the semi-finals last season and getting beaten in the final two seasons ago.

They come into this one on the back of a resilient 4-1 dismantling of Burton Albion at the Kassam Stadium last weekend. Oxford are looking to do the double over Salop after beating Town 2-0 at the Kassam Stadium back in September.

Name: Oxford United

Founded: 1893 (128 years ago) as Headington United

Chairman: Sumrith Thanakarnjanasuth

Biggest Victory: 9-0 vs Wisbech Town, Southern League, 1960

Biggest Defeat:  7-0 vs Wigan Athletic, League One, 2017

One to Watch: Matty Taylor

Matty Taylor has been in sensational form this season, netting 18 league goals in 35 appearances, and is Oxford’s main talisman. He’s the third top goalscorer in the league and netted in the win over Burton last week. Currently in his second stint at the club and at the age of 31, Taylor is in the prime of his career and will be Oxford’s biggest dangerman when they come to Shropshire on Saturday.
