Post Oxford | Matt Pennington

10 November 2022

Goalscorer Matt Pennington spoke to the media following our draw with Oxford.

Town played out a 1-1 draw with Karl Robinson's side at Montgomery Waters Meadow - a result that lifted us up to tenth in League One.

The visitors took the lead against the run of play when Cameron Brannagan saw a shot from just inside the box deflect past Marko Marosi.

Matt went onto level for Town in the second half. But speaking post-match, the defender said he was disappointed we didn't take all three points - with the team creating more than enough chances to win the game.

ON THE RESULT:

“It felt like we were good value for the win tonight, I felt we were the dominate team overall and we had a few chances to get that win.

"It wasn’t to be but the lads showed some good togetherness and we put in a decent performance.”

“We started really well and we were on the front foot and you could see they were taken aback in the first 10-15 minutes.

"Their goal was against the run of play which was unfortunate but we knew they were a team of shooters.

"Ufortunately we gave them time to have a shot and it goes in the back of the net which was a shame but we were able to get back in the game and we had chances to win it.”

“We had quite a few corners and chances, momentum was building and thankfully we got a goal and I thought we could of gone on and got the next one.

"It was nice (being back on the scoresheet) I'm trying to sniff goals out this season.

"I have got three this year which is good and I'm hoping to get more."

ON THE FEELING AFTER SCORING:

“I was buzzing to get the lads back in the game because we were working so hard and I felt like we deserved it.

"I'm glad I could get it for the team and not get beat tonight and we move forward a few places in the league and keep a bit of momentum.”

ON BEING IN THE TOP HALF OF THE TABLE:

“It gives the boys confidence to go again and hopefully we can rest and recover over the next couple of days as it’s a quick turnaround for Barnsley on Saturday.

"We need to put in a performance then and get the three points hopefully.”

“It a demanding schedule but compared to the previous week - where we had Plymouth and Portsmouth away - we put in a big shift that week.

"I feel like the lads are in a good shape to do it again on Saturday as there’s no reason why we can’t as it's not a hard a week where we are travelling as well.

"We can go to our homes and rest and recover over the next couple of days so we are ready to go again on Saturday.”
