Post Peterborough | Steve Cotterill

26 November 2022

Manager Steve Cotterill spoke to the media after watching his team secure a place in the third round of the FA Cup by beating Peterborough.

Tom Bayliss got Town off to a flying start at Montgomery Waters Meadow when he netted with a wonderful sweeping finish after just two minutes.

Shrewsbury then went on to secure a 3-1 victory with Matt Pennington netting his fourth goal of the season and Luke Leahy converting a penalty won by Chey Dunkley.

The result means we have now secured a place in third round of the world’s oldest knockout competition for six seasons in a row.

And speaking after the game, Steve discussed his team's performance as well as Matt Pennington's impressive goal-scoring form.

ON THE PERFORMANCE AND WIN:

"That is what we were aiming for. I think the conditions didn't help either team today.

"But I think, overall, when I look at - we deserved to win the game today.

"They had a few chances but we managed to score three goals and managed to keep a clean sheet in the second half.

"That was going to be really important. I felt the first 10 minutes of the second half were going to be really important for us.

"They had a few corners and you just hope one of those does not drop in - or drop to one of their guys in the box.

"But, thankfully, we passed the test and got into the third round."

ON TOM'S EARLY GOAL:

"It was a great finish. I suppose I should not complain about scoring goals, but sometimes you can score a goal a little bit too early.

"But it was a good goal and I thought we started the game really well."

ON MATT'S GOAL:

"He does that. He is as brave as anything in both boxes.

"But today that was a striker's finish. The ball got palmed out and he was onto it really, really, quickly.

'But we are pleased with whoever scores the goals."

ON LUKE'S PENALTY:

"Matthew Pennington has kept the ball alive. And Chey Dunkley has reminded me about his touch and his anticipation to get the penalty - so well done Chey! He was quite pleased with that.

"And then Luke, he is good from the penalty spot. But that doesn't just happen, he practises - he practises a lot."

ON THE SECOND HALF DISPLAY:

"I've said to the boys in the dressing room, we have had to show two sides of us today.

"In the second half, we had to show the other side of us and they are a good team.

"No two halves in football are the same, no two halves are the same. And when you have the wind out there that you had today it is difficult, it's difficult."

ON THE CUP DRAW:

"The prize money is important as is the money from the two gates.

"We are in good credit there. Now you just hope for the luck of the draw.

"Over the years Shrewsbury have been very lucky with the draws and the games we have had. Let's hope that continues."
