Post Fleetwood Town | Tom Bayliss

15 October 2022

Goalscorer Tom Bayliss spoke to the press after Shrewsbury’s 1-0 away victory at Fleetwood.

The 23-year-old scored his third goal in seven games at the Highbury stadium as Shrewsbury bring their tally of away wins to three.

The summer signing has previously said it took him a little while to get settled but now he's hit a run of form, he told the press he's really enjoying his football and feels more comfortable in his role.

Tom discussed all of the above, the clean sheet, the league table and the team spirit within Steve Cotterill's squad.

On the win away:

“We spoke about it a lot in the week as we have been losing and winning and obviously to get the back-to-back wins especially at a tough place like this in real tough conditions is great. The wind really played a part in both halves of the game.

“We should have been four or five up in the first half with the chances we created and then it was a great defensive performance from the boys in the second half to get the three points.”

Thoughts on his goal:

“I have been working a lot on that in training (the strike) and I want to get my numbers up this season. There are a few others of us in the carpool and we laugh about getting goals and assists and we said hopefully we get two in two. Jordan Shipley is also in the carpool so when he crashed one off the bar in the second half it could've been brilliant. But it was a near-perfect day for us and it was a really good team performance and I'm buzzing for myself and obviously the team.

“I had a similar chance at Cheltenham away a couple of weeks ago where the ball has kind of come back to me and their full-back cut it out with a first-time shot so I thought I should let it come across my body, but it got caught under my feet so I thought I would just swing with my left foot and it luckily nestled in the top corner nicely.”

His third goal of the season:

“I am playing with a lot of confidence at the moment which the gaffer has given me and I think the lads have really gelled in recent times. Obviously, it took us a little bit of time to get going but now things are clicking we have a really good squad in there and we could possibly do something special this season so we are obviously buzzing with today.”

The clean sheet:

“The gaffer says the back five - of course the back line had a lot of balls out of our box in our second half - but he works a lot on the attacking players as well as we have to do the defensive work on the other side of the ball and he works us very hard on the training pitch and we are very well drilled in that sense.”

The League table:

“Yeah definitely (Shrewsbury are setting good foundations sitting in 8th). We don’t want to be looking down this season, we want to be looking up and to get ourselves into joint sixth is really positive for us. Now we need to maintain that as we have a tough week coming up next week and we will be looking to get three points as much as possible and keep us that league.”

The third away win of the season:

“Yeah definitely (Town are picking up a lot of points.) Like I said in an interview after the first couple of games in the season we have enjoyed playing away from home but recently we lost both of the games away from home at Port Vale and Cheltenham where we weren’t really at it. We know that ourselves but I personally enjoy playing anywhere as it’s football but I'm buzzing to get the three points.”

Playing on a weekly basis:

“That’s why I came here. The gaffer said to me when I came here that I would play and he knows my qualities. I have been working really hard with him and I'm really enjoying my football again; that’s all you can ask for as a footballer and I'm really happy at the moment.”

On the team spirit:

“Yeah (the team spirit is excellent) we have just had a sing-along to Sweet Caroline after the game and we try and do it after every win and the gaffer likes it as well.”
