Post Portsmouth | Elliott Bennett

29 October 2022

Elliott Bennett met with the media after netting his first goal of the season in the draw at Portsmouth.

Town battled their way to an excellent point at Fratton Road - to end a week that has seen them travel more than 900 miles.

Bennett netted just before the half-hour mark on the south coast. But he was forced to come off early in the second-half with an Achilles injury.

Speaking after the game, the wing-back discussed the team's performance, his goal and gave a reassuring update on his injury.

ON THE RESULT:

"Teams will come here and wilt under that pressure but I thought we worked really hard as a group.

"It’s been a tough week travelling wise but you cannot use that as an excuse as that is football and that is what the fixture list has thrown up for us.

“But I think it was a really strong team performance after what was a strong team performance in mid-week against the league leaders."

ON A TOUGH WEEK OF TRAVELLING:

“It’s hard but we can’t complain as that’s just the way it goes - you have to come down here at some point so now it’s over it's nice to say that we have got them two out of the way.

“I thought it was a really good point today and we showed real battling qualities.

"Even the lads that came off the bench came straight into the game and everyone was fighting for each other and that’s what it’s got to be week in and week out.”

“It was a nice surprise as I am not renowned for my goal scoring but I am obviously pleased to score.

"In those situations it all happens so fast - it's kind of like an instinctive thing.

"But I don’t care who scores really as long as we are scoring goals.

"It would have been nice to come away with the win but I'm happy to get on the scoresheet and happy we held out for a draw."

ON PORTSMOUTH'S GOAL:

“It is just frustrating that we conceded. Being part of this team, you have to look at the work rate of the strikers and midfielders as we pride ourselves on getting clean sheets and getting a goal at the other end.

"It's disappointing to concede at any time but particularly when you go 1-0 up as you try and hold out and consolidate for five to 10 minutes after you score but we didn’t manage to do that today.”

ON THE DEFENSIVE EFFORT:

"Incredible, the lads back there put their bodies on the line week in and week out, Chey (Dunkley) Flan (Tom Flanagan), Penno (Matthew Pennington). They have all been magnificent in front of Marko.

"The work Tom Bayliss put in today, Christian Saydee and Rob Street. It is a real team effort.

"Luke Leahy and Winny (Carl Winchester) I do not know how they keep doing what they are doing but that is what the manager demands.

"That is what we know we have got to do. With the squad of players we have got, then we have to go to those levels every single week.

"If we do that, we will get more good results than we don't."

ON HIS INJURY:
"I got a kick on my achilles in the first half. It really stiffened up at half-time, and I thought I would be alright to carry on.

"I got through 15 minutes and I just wasn't able to carry on. I didn't want to let the team down by coming off but I also didn't want to let the team down by being selfish and staying on the pitch when I am not able to do what I needed to do.

"Taylor Moore came on, not his position, works his socks off for the team and does what he does. He was part of a really good team performance in the second half."

ON TOWN'S AWAY FANS:
"Incredible, and that is why we spent the time at the end of the game going over and showing our appreciation.

"They are long journeys for us but we get the luxury to stay in a hotel before.

"They are going to work and travelling down to Plymouth. It is a massive commitment to being a supporter of this football club.

"And we have to thank them for their support over this last week, it takes great commitment doing what they have done.

"Hopefully, tonight they are going home proud of us as a team and proud of the football club - they were there to see the lads work so hard for them."
