First Interview | Carl Winchester

2 September 2022

New recruit Carl Winchester spoke to the media team after joining Shrewsbury on loan from Sunderland.

The versatile midfielder, who won promotion with the Black Cats last season, has joined Town on a loan deal until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Winchester discussed his move to Montgomery Waters Meadow as well as his time at former clubs Oldham, Cheltenham and Forest Green Rovers.

The 29-year-old also spoke about his friendship with Tom Flanagan and Aiden O’Brien - two players he played with at Sunderland.

And he also revealed what manager Steve Cotterill said to him ahead of his arrival in Shropshire.

ON JOINING TOWN:

“I’m delighted to be here. I spoke to a couple of the lads yesterday and they had nothing but good things to say about the club.

“It was the end of the transfer window, I had a couple of conversations with the gaffer. He was keen to bring me here which was a real positive for me.

“At this stage in my career I just want to be playing games.

“I want to say thanks to Sunderland because they are a brilliant club, an outstanding club, a massive club but I just want to play games.

“The manager has watched me at Cheltenham, Forest Green and Sunderland – he's watched me throughout my career and I’ve heard nothing but good things about him.”

ON WHAT ATTRACTED HIM TO SHREWSBURY:

“Speaking to Flanno (Flanagan) and Briz (O’Brien) – they had nothing but good things to say about the club and I thought ‘yeah I’ll have a bit of that.’

“I’ve played with Taylor Moore as well during my time at Cheltenham. He came on loan from Bristol City. He dropped me a message as well yesterday, he’s a great lad.”

ON PLAYING STYLE:

“I’m hard working and I’ll give my all for the team. I’ll put a shift in every week.

“I don’t like to let my teammates down. That is the most important thing.”

ON HIS VERSATILITY:

“I will play anywhere. I’m just happy as long as I am playing. If that’s midfield, sometimes at Sunderland I was playing right centre-back, right wing-back. I’m happy to do a job anywhere.”

ON MAKING OVER 100 APPERANCES FOR OLDHAM:

“It’s a club that means an awful lot to me. They gave me my opportunity in England when I came over as a young lad so that club will always have a special place in my heart.

“I’m buzzing they’ve had a takeover as well because the club deserves to be back in the Football League. I hope they can get there.”

ON TIME AT CHELTENHAM:

“It's all about playing games and learning on the job. It's about playing football at the end of the day. There is no point in just sitting about not playing.

“Every player will tell you they are at their happiest when they are playing.

“When I was at Oldham I felt I needed to go to Cheltenham and play games and that is what I did.”

ON POTENTIALLY FACING FOREST GREEN ROVERS TOMORROW:

“I’m looking forward to going back, I haven’t been back since I left.

“It’s a great little club. I have a lot of time for it and there are a lot people there I’m still in contact with.

“I’m buzzing to go back there. It was a brilliant time in my career, I made some great friends.”

ON TIME AT SUNDERLAND:

“It was unbelievable. If you’d have told me when I was at Forest Green that I would go to Sunderland and be part of a promotion-winning team I wouldn’t have believed you.

“It was something special. That club is amazing, the fans are incredible and it takes a type of player to go up there and play for them.

“You have to wear your heart on your sleeve and give everything because those fans give everything for that club.

“They deserve to be in the Championship and even higher because the potential of that club is phenomenal.”

ON WHAT THE GAFFER HAS SAID:

“He just said come and you’ll enjoy it – we've got a great group of lads.

“Obviously, the signings he has made – it's a really good squad that can compete in this league. That was a big factor in me coming.

“But the gaffer said it’s a great group of lads. Flanno and Briz were saying the same – that I'll enjoy it. So that was also a big factor in me coming.”
