International round-up: Tom Flanagan and Travis Hernes

28 September 2022

Shrewsbury Town centre-back Tom Flanagan and under-18s midfielder Travis Hernes completed their respective international duties last night. Here's how they got on.

TOM FLANAGAN:

The 30-year-old was called up by Northern Ireland for their UEFA Nations League fixtures against Kosovo and Greece.

Flanagan played every minute of both games - starting alongside veteran centre-half Jonny Evans, who earned his 100th cap for the island nation against Greece yesterday - on each occasion.

Northern Ireland played in League C, Group 2 of the Nations League and picked up a valuable win over Kosovo at Windsor Park on Saturday night that all but secured their spot in League C for another campaign.

Late goals from Gavin Whyte and Shayne Lavery ensured Vedat Muriqi's opener didn't cost Flanagan's side any points as they ran out 2-1 winners. The side then travelled to Greece to face their final opponents yesterday evening but fell to a 3-1 loss in Athens.

TRAVIS HERNES:

Shrewsbury Town Academy midfielder Travis Hernes received his first ever international call-up this month when Norway under-18s requested his services.

The 16-year-old and his teammates played in a four nations tournament in Sweden over the past few days, consisting of two games for each side.

Hernes played the second 45 minutes of Norway's match against Denmark under-18s on Saturday and started their next game against Austria yesterday, playing another 45 minutes.

Both games ended in narrow defeats but despite this, Hernes is still really happy he got the opportunity.

He said: "I had a slow start but once I got on the ball more I got more comfortable, I just played my game. I played with a lot of really talented players and I'm just happy I got the opportunity!"
