Post Port Vale | Steve Cotterill

17 September 2022

Steve Cotterill spoke to the media after today's heartbreaking late defeat away at Port Vale.

Shrewsbury Town suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat at Vale Park this afternoon. Ellis Harrison opened the scoring before Christian Saydee equalised on his first start.

Harrison then bagged a 91st-minute winner for the hosts to send Salop home empty-handed.

Cotterill discussed the above as well as Carl Winchester and Elliott Bennett - who started and made the bench respectively - and Tuesday night's Papa John's Fixture against Port Vale.

ON THE GAME:

"I don't think we played well enough to win the game but it's what happens in football. We got a last-minute winner the other night and then a team gets a last-minute winner against you. It's what happens in football and that's why you have to play until the last minute of the game.

"I thought it had a draw written (all) over it. I don't think we did enough to win the game.

"We scored a good goal and threatened a couple of other times. We had a great chance at the end with George Nurse but didn't deserve to win the game. I'm not sure we deserved to lose it though. Either way, we didn't play as well today as we did the other night."

ON CHRISTIAN SAYDEE:

"I knew there was going to be a time when he hit a bit of a brick wall and that's all part and parcel of getting him up to speed but he's played very well for his first outing. We've got to make sure we get him fitter. Coming on as a substitute has helped him and he's had an impact on the game whereas the substitutes really haven't had an impact today when you want that bit of freshness.

"I think we're still getting up to speed with some of them (the new signings) and we're disappointed with the defeat. There's not a lot we can do about it now and not a lot we can do when they score in the 91st minute."

ON CARL WINCHESTER AND ELLIOTT BENNETT:

“Yeah, they're moving in the right direction. They're going to need games to get them up to speed and that’s what happens when players come in late.

“Carl has had a little bit of pre-season but not quite had a full pre-season in terms of games so obviously to get him up to speed I thought was pretty positive. But I'm slightly disappointed that we ended up losing the game today.”

ON TUESDAY NIGHT'S PAPA JOHN'S FIXTURE AGAINST PORT VALE:

“I can’t think about Tuesday at this moment in time as we have to get over the disappointment of this result.

"We will be changing the team around again because we need to do that. We will have a look at the young boys that are available from their game today and how their fitness levels are.”
