Pre Portsmouth | Steve Cotterill

13 April 2023

Manager Steve Cotterill met with the press ahead of our game against Portsmouth.

Town take on John Mousinho's side on the back of putting in a battling display at Barnsley on Easter Monday.

Steve's side were hugely unfortunate not to come away with a point from Oakwell with Killian Phillips denied what looked to be a clear penalty.

Town have been ravaged by injuries all season with Dan Udoh and George Nurse rupturing their anterior cruciate ligaments back in August.

Tom Bayliss is also out for the rest of the campaign after undergoing surgery on his ankle, while Rekeil Pyke and Christian Saydee having also been carrying significant knocks in recent weeks.

Speaking ahead of the game against Portsmouth on Saturday, Steve discussed how injuries have impacted his squad.

And the boss also touched on some of the poor refereeing decisions that have gone against Town recently, whilst also giving his thoughts on Ryan Bowman's red card at Barnsley.

ON THE POSITIVE PERFORMANCE AT BARNSLEY:

"We had that snap back in us at Barnsley that I didn’t think we had, probably more in the Peterborough game than at Charlton.

"I think Charlton was one of those freak results where everything we did we got punished for.

"I think it was more missing a little bit in that Peterborough game.

"But I always think it is an awkward one when you have been on the wrong side of a defeat and then you come back home.

"I think then you so want to put the record straight and Peterborough are on form at the moment – that is where they are. They are on form.

"Don’t forget we just played two teams in Peterborough and Barnsley who have just come out of the Championship.

"I always think those sides that come out of the Championship will be there or thereabouts anyway. They were tough games for us.

"But I thought against Barnsley we had an absolutely nailed-on penalty.

"And the normal thing has happened – normal is we don’t get that, especially if we are away from home.

"But we had one against on Friday which was never a penalty, it was never a penalty. Nobody even appealed for it.

"Those things are hurting us at the moment. The injuries hurt. But we keep going because it’s been a really good season.

"If you have a look down at the bottom now, all the teams in and around 18th, 19th, 20th – they would give their right arm to be where we are – just like we would have done last year.

"All in all when you look at it, our budget, the players, our injuries – we have had a great season. But we still want to make it even better if we can."

ON RECENT RESULTS:

"Sometimes it can happen. Even a good boxer can get beat. It can happen, especially when we are asking the players to do the shifts they are doing.

"What we really needed to do was replace a couple in January but the club couldn’t afford to do that.

"So there is no other way around it other than you have to push the lads as far as you can push them.

"Sometimes you get it back but sometimes that can break.

"We have probably had the weakest squad available to us in the strongest run of games we have had and we have also got ahead of us. That’s just a fact of what has happened."

ON RYAN BOWMAN’S RED CARD:

"It was two yellows so you can’t appeal. I can see why Ryan Bowman got in there.

"There wasn’t really anything in it. He throws him to the ground but if Ryan Bowman uses the same force he couldn’t throw me to the ground.

"There was a bit of game-playing going on but there is nothing we can do about that now."

ON THE PORTSMOUTH GAME:

"We are trying to prepare as best we can. If we can show the same fight we had in us – because no matter what you have to fight in all of these games.

"They are a really good team, they will have a good following – like they always do, Pompey.

"They are a very, very, good club with a great fan base. It will be a tough game."
