Shrews Women make County Cup final!

3 April 2023

Shrewsbury Town Women reached the final of the Shropshire County Cup after knocking-out favourites Wem Town yesterday.

Salop and Wem took to the pitch yesterday afternoon in the Shropshire County Cup semi-final.

Wem, who play in the tier above Shrewsbury, are the highest-ranked women's team in Shropshire and were therefore favourites in the competition.

However, it was Salop who dominated the majority of the play and picked up a deserved victory.

Their first chance of the game came when Alicia Robinson was fouled on the edge of the box and captain Vikki Owen lined up to take the free kick.

Her effort soared through the air and forced a great save from Wem's 'keeper at her right-hand post.

Libby Veitch was the next person to test Wem's goalie, but she was equal to the right-footed strike from distance.

Veitch then broke through the defence and took aim once more, but could only find the side netting on this occasion.

After a lovely move that involved Robinson, Charlotte Fletcher, Veitch and Paris Schofield, Zoe Child found herself one-on-one but again, the effort was saved.

Town finally broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark. Child forced Wem's centre halve into an error and broke away from the defence. She took one touch before curling the ball into the bottom left-hand corner of the net to give Town the lead.

Owen came close to doubling the lead before the break but she couldn't quite get on the end of Maddie Jones' corner kick.

Wem grew into the game in the second half but were unable to find their way past Shrewsbury's stubborn defence, who held on to their clean sheet and Salop secured their place in the final of the Shropshire County Cup where they will meet Shifnal Town.

Town XI:

Carter, Rimmer, Cook, Owen (C), Jones, Veitch, Child, Rooney, Schofield, Robinson, Fletcher

Bench:

Layton, Potter, Lowden, France, Griffiths

Goalscorer Zoe Child reflected on the game:

“It was a great game, an amazing game from the girls today. Everyone put such a shift in, stuck to the game plan and executed it to a tee. We’re just really happy to be honest.

“I’m so pleased to get that goal for the girls really. Everyone worked so hard and we deserved something today, I’m glad I was the one to get the goal.

“We needed a game like this today to bring morale back up, get the team together again and just get back to old ways. That worked really well for us today.”
