Pre Exeter City | Steve Cotterill

14 February 2023

Steve Cotterill met with the press ahead of tonight's game at Exeter.

Town head to St James Park looking to secure a seventh straight league win. If we do it, we will have equalled our points total for the 2021/22 season with 15 games remaining.

The Grecians gave Town a good game when the sides met at the Meadow back in September, with Salop coming out 3-2 winners.

Speaking to the assembled media, Steve discussed the past six matches, gave his view on Town sitting top of the League One form table and gave an update on the fitness of the squad.

ON WHAT HAS IMPRESSED HIM IN THE PAST SIX GAMES:

"The consistency in our play. I think our organisation has been good. I think that we've deserved to win the games that we've won, I don't think there's anything in that when I look back at the games.

"I think that the organisation is important, the energy levels of the players, the endeavour - all of those things really."

ON EXETER:

"When we played Exeter earlier in the season, I thought, for a while, that they were one of the better teams we'd played.

"I thought they were very good under Matt Taylor, I've only seen a couple of [their] games of late under Gary (Caldwell) so we're expecting a tough game but it's one we're looking forward to."

ON BEING IN THE TOP TWO FOR FORM IN THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE:

"I don't think we've ever been top of the form table since I've been here, be that in our league or in the 92 that's for sure.

"I suppose progression (would be his initial thought after hearing that stat). As I've said before, I'll never forget those boys who were in here at the start but I think it shows progression in the football club.

"I think the average age has been lowered dramatically so I think there's value in the squad now, but that's no different to what I would've done at any other club. [I'm] trying to do the right thing for the football club and I've always done that."

ON MATT PENNINGTON:

"He's better but what he needs to do is get through training again. He trained yesterday and he needs to train again today and then we'll have a better idea."

ON THE SQUAD'S FITNESS:

"Carl Winchester picked up a knock but that was just a knock on his calf. We thought, when the shout first came over, that he had pulled his calf which was why the substitution was made immediately. We then thought it was a knock.

"Everybody else seems okay but I haven't spoken to all of them yet (as of 9:00am Monday morning) because we're doing press early but as I'm thinking at the moment, the only issues at the moment would've been (Matt) Pennington and Wini (Carl Winchester) who were in yesterday.

"We just hope they're all okay after today."
