However, Ross Stewart and Luke O’Nien both scored in stoppage time to turn the tie around for Sunderland.
Meanwhile, Burton Albion’s FA Cup tie also ended in defeat as they lost 1-0 away at Grimsby Town. Lewis Richardson grabbed the only goal of the game in the second half to send his side through.
Prior to the FA Cup, Shrewsbury lost 3-0 at home to Fleetwood Town in their last league outing.
Visitors Burton Albion last league fixture was away at Morecambe, where the Brewers were beaten 5-0 by the Shrimps.
