First Interview | Elliot Thorpe

12 July 2023

Elliot Thorpe sat down with Salop for the first time since completing his season-long loan move from Luton Town.

The 22-year-old wing-back – who can also play in central midfield - has today signed on to work with his previous coach, Matt Taylor, for the 2023/24 season.

Having worked with Matt at Tottenham Hotspur, Elliot is the fifth player to put pen to paper at Salop this summer following the signings of Michael Parker, Morgan Feeney, Carl Winchester and Elliott Bennett.

Conducting his first interview since joining the club, 'Thorpey' discussed, how happy he was to have joined, how pre-season has gone for him so far, Matt Taylor and provided a message to Shrewsbury fans.

SPEAKING AFTER SIGNING, ELLIOT SAID:

"I'm very happy to be here, it's good to see everyone.

"I've been here for a couple of hours meeting everyone and I'm delighted to be here and I can't wait to get going.

"They're a very welcoming group. Obviously, the gaffer has been very good with me, I've met most of the staff and the lads look good! They've let me know I missed a tough day today so I'm in for it tomorrow!

"When I knew of interest from the head coach I spoke to him and my agent.

"Shrewsbury is a big club, a solid club and I wanted to get it done as early as possible, get a feel for the place, be in and around the lads and just get going as quick as I can really.

"The games are going to come thick and fast when the season starts so yeah, I was really happy and wanted to get it done pretty quickly to be fair."

ON HIS PRE-SEASON TO DATE:

"I haven't been back that long but I'm fit, I'm in a good place and some minutes on the legs will do me good and will help me to gel with the boys as well with how we want to play and things like that.

"I'm well on my way, I had a good off-season, so I kept fit in the off-season, and been back and done some testing at Luton a few training sessions so I'm in a good place so yeah I'm good to go."

ON MATT TAYLOR:

"I've known Matt for a few years now. He's a great coach and a great person, so when I knew of the interest I was very keen to pursue it.

"He's a good coach and I know how he wants to play so yeah, I think it's a perfect fit for me."

"He demands a lot but he wants 100% and I think that's a given really in any walk of life in any job you're in, you give 100% every day - that's a given.

"He's good with young players I know that because I worked with him a few years ago [at Tottenham Hotspur].

"It's good, it was definitely a big driving force for me coming here. I know the club is a fantastic club anyway but to top it off Matt being the coach was a big pull for me."

ON HIMSELF AS A PLAYER:

"Matt first knew me as a central midfielder but in the last year or so I've been more out wide as a wing-back on either side, right or left.

"I'm quite quick and I can run about for a long time get up and down, so yeah I can run a lot I'll always give 100%.

"[I've got a] decent cross but I'll try and pop in a few goals as well. That'll be good."

HIS MESSAGE TO THE FANS:

"I'm really happy to be here, I can't wait to get going and meet all you lot, it seems like a great club, great bunch of fans, and I'm very happy to be here and very excited."
