Match Report | Stourbridge 1-1 Shrewsbury Town

25 July 2023

Salop and Stourbridge played out a 1-1 draw as Matt Taylor made wholesale changes to his starting 11.

A lively start by Premier League loanee Elliot Thorpe saw him venturing down the left-hand side from the off before scoring a thunderbolt into the top right-hand corner of the net in the ninth minute.

Salop continued to dominate possession for the opening 20 minutes before The Glassboys found a way into the game as Dexter Walters picked up the ball on the edge of the box and drilled a shot past the outstretched Harry Burgoyne to make it all square at the break.

Head coach Matt Taylor made 11 changes from the team that faced Coventry on Saturday, with all the players who started that game getting a rest on the night.

Two trialists started for Shrewsbury, both looking to impress alongside new signings Jason Sraha, Elliott Thorpe, Tunmise Sobowale and Michael Parker.

Academy prospects Harvey Watts and Travis Hernes also started for Salop on the night while Zac Prior, Harvey Kirby-Moore, Nana Owusu and Declan Hutchings made up the bench.

It was Town who started the game on the front foot with Thorpe, who was playing at left wing-back, dancing down the flank. He then picked out Aiden O’Brien who fired narrowly over from just inside the box.

A few minutes later and Salop were ahead when Thorpe again darted down the left-hand side. The Luton loanee then cut inside before arrowing an unstoppable strike across goal and into the top corner.

Gradually, Stourbridge began to grow in stature and they pulled level when Walters picked up the ball on the edge of the box before hitting a low drive that found the bottom corner.

The hosts then came close to taking the lead just before the break when Alex Prosser entered the box before producing a strike that whistled past the post.

A second half that had little to offer saw just the one chance as Hernes and Watts combined nicely before Watts’ driven effort was parried wide by the keeper.

The game came to an even close with neither side threatening, concluding an evening where Town got important minutes into as yet untested legs.
