Shrewsbury Town is pleased to announce Tom Ware has joined the club as head of recruitment.
Tom joins us having spent the past four years working at Cheltenham where he enjoyed a successful working relationship with our director of football Micky Moore.
He will now play a key role in identifying transfer targets throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland and will also be responsible for managing our scouts and analysts.
Speaking to the club media team, Tom explained his new role and talked about his relationship with Micky and why he opted to join Town.
ON JOINING SHREWSBURY TOWN:
"I'm really pleased to be here. [From] just looking at the facilities, the stadium, the training ground [there are] really good foundations in place so yeah, I'm delighted to be here."
ON WHAT HIS JOB ENTAILS:
"My job is head of recruitment so I'll be working under Micky (Moore). Micky manages every [footballing] department whereas I'm solely focussed on recruitment.
"My job will be to manage that department so I'll be managing the scouts, video scouts, data analysts, and my job will be to identify players that I will then take to Micky and hopefully he can get the details over the line."
ON HOW HE WILL WORK WITH MICKY MOORE:
"My relationship is really close with Micky, I've worked with him for four years now and essentially he'll give me the responsibility to go out and find the players using the data and the scouting. We use the modern and the traditional methods for scouting and often I'll make the introductions with the agents or the clubs we're speaking to and then Micky will work on the deals.
"Micky will have a big impact in terms of identifying players. Micky will go to games and yeah, it'll be a collaboration between us and the coaching staff."
ON DIFFERENT SCOUTING TECHNIQUES:
"The oldest technique is just going to watch games and that's the most important factor, going to see them live, getting a feel for it.
"But to back up or challenge what we see we'll also use data to identify players in the first place.
"We look at a lot of data because there are a lot of markets we look at now so Scotland, Ireland and non-league that we can't always get to so we'll look at the data to narrow it down before going out and seeing them live."
ON HIS CAREER TO DATE:
"I'd been at Cheltenham for four years. I did a performance analysis degree, did a placement with Cheltenham and went part-time and then full-time.
"I gradually built the role up over time and took on a lot of responsibility in terms of recruitment and yeah, here today."
ON UPCOMING SIGNINGS:
"We're working as hard as we can speaking to agents and speaking to clubs.
"We're hopeful that we are close on one but until it's done we don't know.
"Rest assured we're working as hard as we can and you'll be the first to know!"
