Match Report | Lincoln 1-0 Shrewsbury

7 May 2023

Shrewsbury Town fell to a 1-0 defeat to Lincoln City on the final day of the 2022/23 campaign.

Town were the dominant side for the majority of the proceedings and came close to breaking the deadlock in the 50th minute when Killian Phillips, Ryan Bowman and Rob Street combined well before slipping in Jordan Shipley, who cut in and let fly from inside the box.

The ball looked destined for the back of the net, but Rushworth made himself big and blocked with his chest.

The home side got in front in the 73rd minute when Matty Virtue converted from inside the box from a long throw.

Referee Andy Haines pointed to the spot in the 89th minute when Chey Dunkley, who received a red card for the foul, brought down Ben House in the box.

Max Sanders took the spot kick and drilled a low shot to the right, but Marosi guessed correctly and tipped the ball out for a corner.

Manager Steve Cotterill named an unchanged side for the trip to Lincolnshire with the boss asking his players to go again following the 2-1 win over Bristol Rovers on Tuesday.

Sticking with a 3-4-1-2 formation, Bowman and Street were the front two. In midfield, Luke Leahy and Carl Winchester continued their partnership with Phillips more advanced in the number 10 role.

Mark Kennedy's Lincoln went with a 3-4-3 system with Ben House in the centre-forward position. Olamide Shodipo was out on the left, and Dylan Duffy on the right.

It was one-way traffic for Town in the opening 20 minutes with Shrewsbury dominating possession and creating a number of decent opportunities to break the deadlock.

Our first clear chance arrived in the eighth minute when, following a corner, the ball broke for Leahy around 10 yards from goal.

The skipper took a touch to cleverly skip by his marker before unleashing a powerful strike that took a slight deflection before smashing the post.

From the resultant corner, Chey Dunkley produced an excellent header that Carl Rushworth got down brilliantly to keep out.

Town remained the more dominant of the two sides as the half progressed.

And they came close again just past the half-hour mark when Shipley whipped in a dangerous ball that Phillips headed over.

Town could have broken the deadlock minutes after the interval when Moore sent an excellent cross into the middle of the danger zone.

Street darted for the centre of the box and headed goalward, looking for his second goal in as many games, but Rushworth managed to tip it over the bar.

Shrewsbury combined superbly five minutes after the restart with Street, Bowman and Phillips working their way up the field before slipping in Shipley.

The versatile left wing-back cut in and let fly from inside the box. The ball looked destined for the back of the net, but Rushworth blocked the effort.

Lincoln got their first shot on goal in the 70th minute when Virtue struck a sublime half-volley from just outside the box, but Marko Marosi got across and made a magnificent acrobatic save.

Three minutes later, the home side broke the deadlock from a long throw that made its way through a crowd of bodies to find Virtue inside the box. The midfielder then converted, diverting the ball into the bottom corner.

The Imps came close to a second just before the 80-minute mark when House picked up the ball in the box.

The forward turned before firing a shot from close range, but Moore was there to make a goal-saving block.

Referee Haines pointed to the spot minutes before the final whistle for Lincoln after Dunkley was sent off for bringing down House in the box.

Sanders took the spot kick and drilled a low hard shot to the right, but Marosi guessed correctly and tipped the ball out for a corner.

The final whistle signalled the end of Shrewsbury's 2022/23 season, with Salop occupying 12th spot.
