Post Bristol Rovers | Rob Street

2 May 2023

Rob Street spoke to the press after an emotional day on and off the pitch.

The striker grabbed the second goal of the game in our 2-1 win over Bristol Rovers - a fixture that was our final home match of the season.

Street has had a tough few weeks, with the 21-year-old having attended the funeral of his grandad on the morning of the game.

He then hopped into his car and travelled to Montgomery Waters Meadow to play against Joey Barton's side.

ON PLAYING HIS PART IN A HARD-EARNED VICTORY:

"It was brilliant. We have been unlucky in conceding a few late goals recently, so we just wanted that win for the fans and ourselves in there (changing room).

"We have been low in terms of numbers. We have really been pushing each other on, so there was definitely a big relief when that full-time whistle went today.

"I had to go back down to South London, this morning.

"Unfortunately, my Grandad passed away a few weeks ago now, so I had to give him a send-off at a funeral this morning.

"I then drove straight from there to the game tonight, so it's been a manic day, and I'm shattered now. I need an early night for the next couple of evenings.

"But I know my Grandad, and I know he would have wanted me to play tonight, and I would like to think I have done him proud tonight."

ON LUKE LEAHY SCORING AFTER THREE MINUTES:

"The Gaffer said in the changing room that the first two minutes was probably our best start of the season.

"I think we came out of the blocks really quick and imposed ourselves on the game."

ON HIS GOAL:

"It was a good goal, I think (Ryan) Bowman flicked it down to me and I saw the space on my right-hand side.

"I then drove and finished low and hard across the keeper, which is what you're always told when you are a striker.

"I was obviously delighted with that because it meant that the team won tonight."

ON HIS RECENT GOALS IN FRONT OF THE SOUTH STAND:

"It seems to be my lucky end!

"I wished I scored a few more at the other but, like I say, whenever I can help the team with a goal, no matter where it is in the country, I will be delighted."

ON HIS LOAN SPELL:

"The last eight months have absolutely flown by. It feels like yesterday I joined, and I have got nothing but positive words to say about the club.

"I have loved every minute of it from the coaching staff, fans and players.

"It's a wonderful club, and it's been a privilege to wear the shirt for this season.

"The boys have been brilliant. It's a really tight-knit squad because we have had a smaller squad than some of the other teams in the league.

"We have had to stick together through the highs and the lows, and we have done that. It's a reflection on where we are in the league as we have really stuck together for the whole season."

ON SHREWSBURY BEING BACK IN THE TOP HALF OF LEAGUE ONE:

"We still want to finish in the top 10. The manager has drilled that into us.

"We were looking earlier in the season if we could reach the play-offs, but that has faded over the last few months.

"Now it's like, can we finish in that top 10? And I think if we do it, it will be a really positive season for the club."
