Post Colchester | Jordan Shipley

4 November 2023

Jordan Shipley spoke to the press following his starring display in our 3-2 win over Colchester.

Shipley scored and assisted on his first game back since injuring his knee at Fleetwood back in August.

After the game the 26-year-old spoke about recovering from the injury, his goal and what it meant to him to be back in Town's starting XI:

On his first game back:

“It’s great to be back and to get an assist, I kind of sliced a shot and Udoh who was there to flick it in, but all good number nines must be there.

"And to get a goal as well was great. It's great to be back."

On his goal:

“We’d been talking about balls in behind because they play such a high line.

"I liked to make the run off the striker as he drops deep so Flanno [Tom Flanagan] with his range of passing, he looked up and he saw me make the run.

“It was a great ball. I thought my first touch was a bit heavy, but the keeper hesitated, and it allowed me to get the ball and put it past him.

On how special a moment it was:

“All the boys have been in the gym, me, Nursey, Thorpey. We’ve all been working hard to get back to this moment and play out there in front of the fans, score goals and help the team.

“That’s what we’re all aiming to do so it’s great to be back.

On having to work back from a serious injury:

“I don’t like being injured, I don’t like sitting around doing nothing like I was for the first month.

"I just wanted to get back out there straight away so as soon as I could bend my knee I was out there running.

“I think you’ve seen me going to games and out running [in previous warmups].

“I just really wanted to get out and help the team. Hopefully now we can go out on Tuesday night full of confidence off the back of this win and get a good result.”

On playing further forwards:

“I’ve played there before at Coventry, I like to make those runs in behind the strikers.

"Me and the gaffer had a chat about it. He wants me to get further forward, he wants me to get in behind and he wants me to have more shots, because more shots mean more goals.

"That’s the main thing for us, I want to help the team out in any way I can.”

On the closing stages:

“When we went 3-1 up, we thought we could relax and play our football.

"Then to concede off a set piece wasn’t ideal. But I thought everyone played brilliantly today. We played some good football at times and we kept the ball really well.

“It was a really good performance.”

On scoring three goals today:

"It boosts confidence massively and we could have easily had four or five.

"It's great that we are getting all these chances - now we just have to put them away."
